Insider's Guide to Amsterdam - Part 3 - Places to go
Amsterdam is well-known as a great place for visitors, but what’s it like to live here? We asked our team to tell us about some of their favourite local places.
Amsterdam is renowned for its canal network, a rich and varied history and a vibrant cultural scene. There’s always something to do, from just sitting in your favourite local café and watching the world go by to visiting a world-class museum. And every part of the city has its own unique atmosphere and popular hangouts that only locals know about.
So, to give you an insight into some of the lesser-known attractions of places to go out and about in the city, we asked our colleagues to describe their favourite things to do in Amsterdam. And this is what they suggested.
Get on your bike
We couldn’t talk about the attractions of Amsterdam without talking about cycling. As a compact city with a flat landscape and fantastic cycle routes, it’s easy to see why cycling’s a way of life here – in fact, there are more bikes than people! You can jump on a bike and get to anywhere in the city in less than half an hour. So it’s no surprise that Amsterdam regularly comes out on top in lists of the world’s most cycle-friendly cities.
Enjoy the canals
Of course, the 17th century canal system is at the heart of Amsterdam. Whether you’re cruising down them on a boat or walking alongside them, they’re a beautiful sight – particularly after dark when all the bridges light up. Going on a boat gives you a whole new perspective on the city. And if you want to be more energetic and try something different, you can hire a kayak or a paddle board and go your own way.
Park life
You’ll find green spaces everywhere in Amsterdam and the largest is Amsterdamse Bos, to the south of the city. It offers everything you need for an outdoor adventure, from bike rides and swimming, to picnic spots, and hills and valleys for walking. It’s also home to Goat Farm Ridammerhoeve, one of Amsterdam’s many city farms, with a variety of different animals to see, and Meerzicht Farm where you can meet deer, and sample delicious Dutch pancakes.
Closer to the city, on Vondelstraat near the Vondelpark, you’ll find the Hollandsche Manege – the oldest riding school in the Netherlands. It’s a beautiful hidden gem in a residential area, styled on the Spanish Riding School in Vienna. Sit on the café terrace overlooking the arena, order a coffee and watch the horses trot around with their trainers.
Tulip time
In the springtime, it’s only a short 20-minute trip from the city to the world-famous tulip fields between Haarlem and Leiden. Or, if you don’t want to leave the city, you’ll find the finest blooms at the Bloemenmarkt, and in the windows of the Tulip Museum during the Tulip Festival throughout April.
