Insider's Guide to Amsterdam Part 2 - Places to eat, drink and shop
Amsterdam is well-known as a great place for visitors, but what’s it like to live here? We asked our team to tell us about some of their favourite local places.
Amsterdam is renowned for its canal network, a rich and varied history and a vibrant cultural scene. There’s always something to do, from just sitting in your favourite local café and watching the world go by to visiting a world-class museum. And every part of the city has its own unique atmosphere and popular hangouts that only locals know about.
So, to give you an insight into some of the best places to eat, drink and shop in the city, we asked our colleagues to describe their favourite things to do in Amsterdam. And this is what they suggested.
Food and drink
From street food to fine dining, you’re sure to find something to your taste in Amsterdam. One local delicacy is broodje haring. Served from haringhandels (herring carts) it’s a delicious sandwich filled with raw cured herring, gherkins and onion.
At Westerpark, the Westergasfabriek used to be the city gas works, but now houses a variety of bars, restaurants, coffee roasters, a microbrewery and an art-house cinema. With regular food markets and food festivals, it’s a must for any foodie.
De Hallen in Oud-West is another former industrial building that now specialises in food. In the Food Hallen, you’ll find all styles of upmarket street food available from stalls around a central bar. It also hosts a local food market every other weekend.
Ready for a beer? There are plenty of breweries and microbreweries across the city. But one of the most unusual is Brouwerij‘t IJ, an award-winning microbrewery with a large outdoor drinking terrace in the Oostelijke Eilanden (Eastern Islands) neighbourhood. It’s based in a former bathhouse, next to the De Gooyer windmill.
Or, for a drink with a view, choose one of the city’s rooftop bars. The Juniper & Kin Cocktail Bar on the 21st floor of QO hotel, or the Panorama Restaurant Madam at the A’DAM Tower, offer fantastic views. While, for something more laid-back, why not sip a cocktail in an outdoor jacuzzi in the Volkshotel’s Canvas terrace bar?
Let’s go shopping
If you’re looking for bargains, then IJ-hallen near NDSM on the north bank of the North Sea Canal is the place to go. Offering everything from records and vintage clothing to antiques and home furnishings, this vast flea market has something for everyone.
For more upmarket shopping, Kalverstraat is where you’ll find the best-known chain stores. But if you want something more local, then De Negen Straatjes or ‘The Nine Streets’ between Leidsegracht and Raadhuisstraat is home to 200 different businesses. You can take your choice from independent boutiques, vintage shops and specialty stores selling everything from designer dresses to handmade cosmetics.
